Laguage requirements

Hello,

I am originally from Bulgaria but I live and study in Germany since 2017. I graduated high school this year with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, I had German as a subject for 2 years and I will have a grade on the language. Do I still need to apply a certificate (which I do not posses and I think cannot obtain at the moment) as a proof of language knowledge? As far as I was informed, the IBDP is supposed to be equal to the German Abitur...

Thank you for the information!

Kind regards,
Raphy

Dear Raphy,

The International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB-Diploma) is not recognized as a German higher education entrance qualification. Since it is considered a foreign educational qualification, regardless of the country in which you actually obtained this qualification, our regular rules for foreign educational qualification apply.

Therefore, to apply for admission to Universität Hamburg (bachelor’s degree / Staatsexamen (state examination)), you first need to have your documents checked and recognized by uni-assist, the university application service for international students (see link above).

Because the IB-Diploma isn't a German educational qualification you will also have to submit proof of German language proficiency. Please visit our respective website for a list of accepted language certificates.

Best wishes,
Thomas Walter
