Degree Recognition for MSc Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy

Hello,

I am currently a third-year student pursuing a B.A. General Degree from a college in India, with my major subjects being Psychology and English, and Sociology as a minor. I plan to graduate next year and am very interested in pursuing an MSc in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy at your esteemed university.

However, I noticed that the entry requirements specify the need for a B.Sc. or a polyvalent Bachelor's degree as per the PsychThG and the licensing regulations for psychotherapists (PsychThApprO), which I do not possess. My degree is more interdisciplinary, and I’m concerned about whether it meets the necessary academic requirements for the program.

Given my current qualifications and the fact that I am still in the process of learning German (with basic knowledge so far) preparing myself to study in Germany, I am seeking advice on the following:

Am I eligible to apply for the MSc in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy with my current degree, or is there a specific recognition process I should follow?

If my degree is not directly eligible, are there any bridging or preparatory courses available that I could take to cover the gap in qualifications? If so, could you provide details on how I might apply for these courses?

If studying for an MSc in Clinical Psychology in India and then applying for further training in Germany is a more suitable path, would that be recognized in Germany, particularly for psychotherapy training?

I’m eager to move to Germany for further studies and training and would greatly appreciate any advice you can offer on my options.

Thank you.

Dear anusha24 ,

1) "Am I eligible to apply for the MSc in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy with my current degree, or is there a specific recognition process I should follow?"

a) It is important to understand that the individual departments, institutes and faculties of Universität Hamburg or other institutions are responsible for the admission requirements, selection criteria and application procedure for their master's programs. Therefore, admission requirements, selection criteria, necessary application documents and practical steps in the application process differ, depending on what specific master's program you want to apply for.

Please make sure you have read and understood the specific application information for the master’s program you wish to apply for: https://www.uni-hamburg.de/list-master.

b) If you have read the specific application information for the Master's programme to which you wish to apply and still have questions, please contact the team or person responsible for the program directly. The contact details for any questions regarding an application or application documents for a Master's degree program can be found on the last page of the specific application information.

c) The next opportunity to apply for this degree program is in the application period of the winter semester 2025/26 which begins on June 1, 2025.

2) "If my degree is not directly eligible, are there any bridging or preparatory courses available that I could take to cover the gap in qualifications?"

No. We offer no such courses. All applicants must fulfil the admission requirements before applying.

3) "If studying for an MSc in Clinical Psychology in India and then applying for further training in Germany is a more suitable path, would that be recognized in Germany, particularly for psychotherapy training?"

You must discuss these questions with institutions that offer such training (e.g. ‘PTA Hamburg’ https://www.pta-hamburg.de), as this type of training is not usually offered at universities.

Best wishes
Thomas Walter
