Bearbeitet Questions on insurance and exemptions
To whom it may concern

I am a PhD student at the Polytechnic University of Bari (Italy) and will be undertaking a research period at Universität Hamburg, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ingenuin Gasser, Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences, Department of Mathematics—Applied Mathematics.

I would kindly request your assistance with my enrollment as a 'free-mover' for the upcoming winter semester.

Having completed the necessary steps, my application currently holds a 'Received' status, however, I am now concerned about the health insurance requirements.

As a holder of a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), I would like to inquire if it is possible to bypass the process of contacting a German public health insurance provider. If not, I would be grateful if you could provide detailed guidance through the required procedure, as navigating it as a foreign student can be quite complex.

Additionally, I would greatly appreciate a list of relevant links and direct contacts, rather than having to search through various websites.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

Kind regards,
Marco Desiderio Loffredo Senesi
Re: Questions on insurance and exemptions
Dear Marco Desiderio Loffredo Senesi,

1) "As a holder of a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), I would like to inquire if it is possible to bypass the process of contacting a German public health insurance provider."

No, this is not possible for "Free Movers". Our regular rules regarding the necessary electronic notification of the health insurance status also apply to Free Movers.

2) "If not, I would be grateful if you could provide detailed guidance through the required procedure, as navigating it as a foreign student can be quite complex."

a) Please read the information on our website again and pay special attention to section "Information for international students": www.uni-hamburg.de/kven.

b) "European health insurance: If you are publicly insured in another European country, you can use this policy in Germany. Contact a German public health insurance provider so that Universität Hamburg is notified about your exemption." (https://www.uni-hamburg.de/en/campuscen ... v-17202617)

So you contact any German public health insurance agencies (TK, AOK etc.), it does not matter which one, as all German public health insurance agencies are able to send us the necessary electronic notification regarding your health insurance status.

The German health insurance agencies you contact will then check your health insurance and, in the case of almost all European health insurances, send us the electronic notification that you do not need a German health insurance because your insurance is sufficient.

Best wishes
Thomas Walter
