Language of Instruction for MSc Informatics and Application Withdrawal

Dear Admissions Committee,
I have applied for the Master's program in Informatics for the Winter Semester 26/27 and would like to clarify the language of instruction.
Could you please confirm whether the program is taught in English, German, or both?
If the program is primarily taught in German, I would like to know:
1. Whether German language proficiency is mandatory for admission.
2. If so, how I can withdraw my application.
3. Whether there are any similar Master's programs offered in English.
Thank you for your assistance.
Kind regards,
Siddharth Anoop Srivastava

Dear sid7,
Please do not rush an application. We strongly recommend that you carefully read all available information and ask any questions you may have before submitting an application.
Once an application has been submitted, applicants cannot edit (or delete) the application form themselves. However, if you have made a crucial mistake, such as entering incorrect information or uploading the wrong application documents or you want to delete the entire form, you may contact us via our
contact form.
In such cases, we would need your explicit confirmation that we should reset the status of your application to “open”, which would allow you to edit and resubmit (or delete) the application form.
We hope you understand that, in an application process with tens of thousands of applicants, we try to avoid unnecessary complication caused by mistakes that could easily have been avoided. The application period lasts for six weeks. An application submitted on the first day has the same chance of being accepted as one submitted on the last day. Submitting early does not give you any advantage in our application procedure.
Important to read:
- Program-specific application information for each Master's degree program
- General application information for the current Master's application period for the winter semester 2026/27[/list]
Your questions:
1. Whether German language proficiency is mandatory for admission.
2. If so, how I can withdraw my application.
- If you already submitted your application form in STiNE, please contact us via our contact form.
- State the application number (BW-******) and explicitly request, to re-open your application.
- A few days later we will confirm the changed status via e-mail.
- Once re-opened you can work with the application form again, like you did before. So, you can make changes, re-submit or delete the application form.
3. Whether there are any similar Master's programs offered in English.
Please take a look at the different Master's degree programs one can study at the Department of Informatics: https://www.inf.uni-hamburg.de/en/studies/master.html
The following of these programs are taught entirely in English and therefore do not require any German language skills:
- M.Sc. Data Science and Artificial Intelligence
- M.Sc. Intelligent Adaptive Systems
However, these two program do not participate in the current application period for Master's program (May 1 to June 14), but in an early application period for the so-called "International Master's degree programs", which is a group of programs that have a high number of international applicants and thus applicants usually need a little more time in advance if they are selected to take care of visa etc.
Since the application period for these International Master's degree programs (including M.Sc. Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and M.Sc. Intelligent Adaptive Systems) is February 15 to March 31 of each year, the next opportunity to apply for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence or Intelligent Adaptive Systems would be next year, beginning on February 15, 2027 for the winter semester 2027/28.
Best wishes
Thomas Walter
