Bearbeitet Accreditation of International high school degree

Beitrag von peter_roland.larsen@siemens.com »

My niece wishes to study in Germany at Hamburg university however she holds a Venezuelan High school diploma. She would have to study in an English language.

What are her options for studying at the university directly or alternatively preparatory education.

I case she can't study at the Hamburg university which other options may be available?

Dear Mr. Larsen,

If your niece holds a High School Diploma and not a first university degree (e.g. a bachelor degree) yet, there is no possibility for her to study at Universität Hamburg in English language, since Universität Hamburg does not offer first degree programs in English. We only offer master degree programs in English, but to apply for those, she has to complete a first university degree.

There are some universities in Germany which offer first degree programs in English though. So if she wants to study in Germany directly, the first step would be to do some research about which universities offer which degree programs in English in Germany. A useful tool for research on that subject is the Higher Education Compass, which comprises a search engine to find all study programs in Germany: https://www.hochschulkompass.de/en/degr ... earch.html

But if she holds a Venezuelan High School Diploma and has not studied at a university yet, she probably won't be admitted to any German university directly, but will have to complete a foundation course at a Studienkolleg first. To apply to a Studienkolleg, she will need to learn German, since German Studienkollegs usually require applicants be proficient in German at least at the level B1. The Studienkolleg Hamburg requires level B2 to be admitted. Information on German Studienkollegs is provided here: http://www.studienkollegs.de/home.html

If learning German first is not an option for her, another option would be to start studying in a program of her choice in a country where direct admission to a university with a Venezuelan High School Diploma is possible and transfer to the same or a related program at a German university after she has sucessfully completed one year of studies.

Best regards,
