Dear all,
I had applied for a PhD degree at the chemistry department, MIN and I got an acceptance from the department. But as a prerequisite, they informed me that I should join a graduate school and choose a co-supervisor. I would like to ask, in this case, will I get my PhD from the graduate school or from the chemistry department, MIN? Also, it seems like one must pay registration fees in order to join the graduate school (fees include transportation ticket), is it the same registration fees when one applied through the international office of the university or should I pay another registration fees for the university? I already have a DAAD scholarship.
Is it obligatory for all PhD students to admit to a graduate school?!
I would like also to ask about the registration deadline for summer semester (2018).
Please let me know as soon as possible.
Thanks in advance.
Best,
Mustafa
Dear Mustafa,
the graduate school is part of the chemistry department. The graduate school "offers a curriculum of supplementary courses as a major subject within the MIN doctoral program (MIND). It aims at the professional and personal development of the doctoral students by offering the opportunity to gain further knowledge and expand their skills." (see https://www.chemie.uni-hamburg.de/studi ... ert_e.html).
Maybe the chemistry department thinks your research will be more effective this way? You should ask directly in the department why they advise you to do the graduate school and what advantages this way will have for you.
For the semester contribution and the next steps, it doesn't matter if you do the doctoral studies on your own or in the structured program.
After you've got the admission from chemistry department/graduate school, you're going to enroll at the Universität Hamburg. First, you have to register at www.stine.uni-hamburg.de and start an online application for the program you've got admitted to.
After submitting the online application electronically, you have to print it and send it along with the other documents mentioned at https://www.uni-hamburg.de/en/campuscen ... otion.html (menue "Enrollment") to the Team of Student Affairs.
These documents include your admission letter form the faculty, your master's degree and a proof of your health insurance.
You'll get enrolled as a PhD student, then, and have to pay the semester contribution like all enrolled students at Universität Hamburg. You can find the amounts of the last semester and what is included in this amount at https://www.uni-hamburg.de/en/campuscen ... itrag.html
There is no registration fee.
The summer semester starts on 1st April. If you want to take part in the graduate school, you should enroll till the mid of March, so you get all necessary documents till the semester starts and you can register for the offered courses. But it's not a strict deadline.
With kind regards

Dear Antje,
Thanks for your reply. The things now are much clear. But one more question if you do not mind, I would like to ask what is the deadline for the application for summer semester? I had noticed that it is only valid to register for the summer semester in the period from December 1st to January 15th.
Is there any chance to register for this summer semester?!
Best,
Mustafa ElGharib

Dear Mustafa,
as a PhD student you do not have a specific deadline for the online application/enrollment via STiNE.
As you have to pay the semester contribution for the whole semester, I would advise you to enroll till the mid of March, so you'll get your documents - esepcially the student's public transport ticket - in time. But it will also be possible to enroll in April or May. You should just be aware that you still have to pay the whole amount of 325 Euros, then. Even if you didn't use the public transport for 2 months.
And, as mentioned before, if you take part in the graduate school and therefore join classes, it also would be good to be enrolled till the semester starts on 1st April. Otherwise you might miss the first lessons in these classes.
Kind regards,

Dear Antje,
I hope you are doing great. Now that I have been admitted to the chemistry department and finally got the admission letter, I'd like to enroll as a PhD student at Hamburg University. Do you know how long it takes the whole process to get enrolled? The thing is my monthly transportation ticket is already expired and I do not know whether it takes longer time so that I have to buy another monthly ticket or it just takes a couple of days?!
P.s. All the needed documents will be sent by today to the student affairs office.
Accept my great regards;
Mustafa

Dear Mustafa,
Usually, it only takes about a week after you've submitted your paper documents till you're enrolled conditional.
You'll get limited semester documents, first. These include the access dates for your student's account.
After you've piad the semester contribution, you'll get enrolled unconditional.
You also contacted us via the contact form and we forwarded your request to the responsible Team of Student's Affairs.
Kind regards
