Good morning, dear sir or madam!
My name is Alexandra, I currently live in Russia and wish to proceed to Hamburg University. I have some questions connected with study courses and transferring documents to your university. I will be highly grateful if you will be so kind to answer them. Thank you!
1. Could you please explain, how the Nebenfach and Kernfach are working? I can choose any programme as a Kernfach and add any additional course as Nebenfach? Is it possible to choose Betriebwirtschaftslehre as Nebenfach and Organisationspsychologie (Oder Entwicklungspsychologie) as Kernfach?
2. I study in Russia, and I have only 11 years of education. I will either go to Studienkolleg in Hamburg or study for one year in Russian University and transfer my documents to your University. Which course should I choose in Russia to transfer to Hamburg University for Betriebwirtschaftslehre course? We have no similar course, the range of programs is limited. Does Management pass? Or economics?
Thank you so much for answering my questions and guiding me!
Best wishes,
Alexandra
Dear Alexandra,
You can choose any Bachelor of Arts degree program or Bachelor of Science degree program offered by Universität Hamburg as major ("Hauptfach"). You can choose a minor ("Nebenfach") in the Bachelor of Arts degree programs offered by Universität Hamburg only - the Bachelor of Science degree programs do not include a minor. The Bachelor of Arts degree program in sign-language and sign-language interpreting; political science; social economics and the economy and culture of China constitute an exception to the rule: these subjects do not require and do not allow students to study a minor subject.
So you can choose Betriebswirtschaftslehre as a minor and combine it with every Bachelor of Arts degree program, but you cannot choose a minor if you choose Betriebswirtschaftslehre as a major, since it is a Bachelor of Science degree program. The same holds for psychology, since this is a Bachelor of Science degree program, too.
The subjects that can be selected as a minor subject in the Bachelor of Arts degree programs are marked "yes" in the column "as MS" in this overview of the bachelor degree programs. For a few major and minor subjects, there are restrictions on combinability. Information on the restrictions can be found in the leaflet Basic Courses at the University of Hamburg (PDF - German only).
If you choose to attend a Studienkolleg in Germany you will have to choose the W-course if you want to study Betriebswirtschaftslehre. I cannot tell you which exact course you should choose at a Russian university in order to be eligible for Betriebswirtschaftslehre in Germany afterward. Your year of study will be checked by uni-assist (University Application Service for International Students) if you want to apply for Universität Hamburg later, so I cannot tell you in advance what the results of this check will be regarding any specific courses you will take. But my advice would be to choose a course which covers classes in business administration as well as in general economics.
Best regards,
Birte Schelling
