Bearbeitet Question for residence permit under coronavirus situation
Dear Madam/Sir,

May I ask if there are any new policies for students who can finish their study at UHH without a residence permit?

I left Germany on 23.05.2020 and went back to my own country, according to the law, I should back to Germany before 19.11.2020. However, I am thinking it should be safe for me to stay at home, as the whole world is in a big pandemic issue, which is risky for taking the international flights.

Normally people who hold the residence permit can only stay outside Germany for maximum 6 months, and the residence permit goes invalid if people stay outside Germany for more than 6 months. Therefore, it would be nice if I can finish my study even if I do not have the residence permit. ( I am planning to finish my study by the end of next semester.)

Thank you so much for your time and I am looking forward to your reply!
Kind regards,
Shiyu Wang
Re: Question for residence permit under coronavirus situation
Dear Shiyu Wang,

You have already asked this very question via our Campus Center contact form.
Have you received a reply to your request of June 29, 2021? I assume that this is not the case and that is why you are asking this question again, but it would be helpful if you could confirm this for me.

Best wishes
Thomas Walter

Re: Question for residence permit under coronavirus situation
Dear Shiyu Wang,

1) "May I ask if there are any new policies for students who can finish their study at UHH without a residence permit?"

a) This is a misunderstanding. Since there is no regulation of Universität Hamburg for students regarding a residence permit, such regulations cannot have changed. Please note that I'm only talking about our regulation, i.e. regulation of Universität Hamburg.

No proof of a valid residence permit is required at Universität Hamburg for enrollment. We do not require students to prove to us that they have a valid residence permit, nor do we have rules for cases in which students do not have a residence permit.

Enrollment at as university and residence permit in Germany are two separate issues, with two different institutions responsible.

b) This doesn't mean that having no residence permit can't cause a problem for your studies. If you have to be present in person, for example for a class or exam in your degree program, this would of course be a problem without a residence permit.

c) I would advise you to contact the academic office responsible for your degree program to find out whether you will have to attend courses or take exams in the future to complete your degree program.

2) "I left Germany on 23.05.2020 and went back to my own country, according to the law,"

The regulation you are referring to ("according to the law") is not a regulation of Universität Hamburg. Therefore, you have to address this question and all associated questions regarding your residence permit with the responsible institutions and not with us.

Best wishes
