Hello,
I'm trying to figure out how to apply to the Medicine program at Uni-Hamburg. Our family is moving to Hamburg soon, and I need other preparations (I speak some German but not at C1 level yet) but planning ahead, hopefully for an application next year.
I have reviewed the information about international applicants, including the bonus point system for non-EU application where 30 points come from my high school grades. I completed high school in 1999, that was back in Brazil, and later I started a college program but quit after two years. First problem is that my old high school grades are only average, not very strong for a competitive application but my partial college history is much better with excellent grades.
Is there a way for me to use those recent/college grades in my application, or some other way to improve my chances? I'm willing to do additional tests, preparatory courses, anything that can help. The selection system already mentions a "Preparatory pre-Semester" and other items but they don't weigh much, even if I have excellent grades.
thanks for any help, Alessandra D.
Dear opinali,
please read the following information websites for prospective international students. https://www.uni-hamburg.de/en/campuscen ... hluss.html
You mentioned the bonus points already: https://www.uni-hamburg.de/en/campuscen ... cht-eu.pdf - unfortunately, you can not use foreign college grades for points.
You will need German at level C1 to apply for medicine: https://www.uni-hamburg.de/campuscenter ... kenntnisse

Thanks for your help already. Unfortunately my prospects don't seem good in this case. Even the grades that I have may be difficult to validate/convert for Germany because I didn't make the Brazilian "ENEM" high-school leaving tests (I graduated before the ENEM was established and mandatory).
Is there any way you know that I can improve my competitivity, since I can't use foreign college history? I would be willing to make a full year of some foundation / remedial high school studies in Germany, if that could significantly supplement or replace my older HS grades.
cordially,
Alessandra.

Dear Alessandra,
if you are unsure whether your high school degree qualifies as a German university entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung or HZB) you can check it here: https://anabin.kmk.org/db/schulabschlue ... chulzugang
If your result shows no direct qualification, you could look into the possibility to gain university entrance qualification at a German Studienkolleg: https://studienkolleg-hamburg.de/das-st ... -englisch/
In any case, you will have to improve your German proficiency if you really wish to pursue your wish to study medicine. Since medicine is a highly requested program, you will need all the bonus points that you can collect to get admission - please check the bonus points PDF again to see what points are realistic to collect - for example, consider studying another degree program first, like Biology?
There are many more job opportunities in the field of medicine if you think your chances of medicine are slim, maybe you would like to check the following links:

All the best!
