Bearbeitet Health Insurance - International Student MIBAS
I applied to the MIBAS program and got an acceptance. I have now filled the enrollment application from before 4th june deadline.
I am a non-eu student so i don't have health insurance yet. the uhh website says 'International students who are currently abroad and can only take out valid health insurance in Germany can register their insurance after arriving in Germany' Can you guide me when should i apply for health insurance? Should i apply right now or later in August/september before program starts? Please guide me.
Re: Health Insurance - International Student MIBAS
Dear simrahsohail,

"Can you guide me when should i apply for health insurance? Should i apply right now or later in August/september before program starts?"

1) We do not offer any counseling or advice regarding the issue of health insurance.

If you require additional information or counselling, please contact the "Counselling Centre for Social & International Affairs – BeSI" of the "Studierendenwerk Hamburg", which is responsible for this topic: https://www.stwhh.de/en/counselling/cou ... fairs-besi. Thank you.

2) Please note that, although there is no formal deadline, we require an electronic notification by a German public health insurance agency to complete the enrollment process (see www.uni-hamburg.de/pe).

If you have submitted your enrollment application within the enrollment deadline (see letter of admission) your status will remain 'provisionally enrolled' after processing until we receive the electronic notification from a German public health insurance agency, as explained on our website: www.uni-hamburg.de/kven.

The only issue is that if we have not received the status message by 1 October 2025, we cannot issue the official proof of enrollment, and you will not yet receive the semester ticket, which is valid from the beginning of the semester (1 October).

Therefore, if possible, it would be good to receive the electronic notification regarding your health insurance status before 1 October. However, some international students are not able to do so for a variety of reasons, and as mentioned previously, this does not affect your admission. You will not lose your place or anything of this sort, but some documents (semester certificate and semester ticket) which are only issued after completion of the enrollment process will be available to you later.

Best wishes,
Thomas Walter
